Summer has officially come to an end, and for many of us that means changes to our daily routines. The beginning of Autumn means back to school, shorter days and chilly temperatures. Even if you’re not setting an earlier alarm to get the kids up and ready for school, seasonal changes can take a toll on energy and productivity.
To avoid seasonal slumps, check out our top tips for having your best mornings and most productive days.
1. Early to bed, early to rise
Challenge yourself and try waking up 30-60 minutes earlier to get in a quick workout or meditation session, or take some time to prepare yourself a hearty breakfast or nutritious lunch to take to work. Taking a few extra minutes to do something for yourself can alleviate stress and make you feel more proactive and in control. There have also been numerous studies that show early risers tend to be more productive.
2. Get enough sleep
You’ve probably heard this one before, but we can’t stress enough how important it is to get your 8 hours of beauty sleep. Depriving the body of sleep can lead to a multitude of health problems including heart disease, stroke, depression, memory and cognitive impairment, decreased alertness and much more. Your body and mind need time to repair and refuel, so make sure you’re giving yourself these invaluable zzz’s.
3. Eat breakfast
The word breakfast literally means to break a fast – something you’ve been doing since eating dinner the night before. Do yourself a favor and give your mind and body the fuel required for the day ahead. Eating breakfast is especially important for the brain, which depends on glucose (a type of sugar) to function properly. If you don’t have time to cook breakfast or even sit down for a bowl of cereal, grab a yogurt or piece of fruit to eat on the train or when you get to the office. Need breakfast inspiration? 4. Follow a routine (or simplify the one you have)
Having a daily routine will help you stay organized, calm and in control in the morning. It will also save you valuable time and help you avoid feeling rushed or anxious. If you don’t already have a routine or you’d like to simplify your current one, here are a few tips to get your started:
- Go to sleep and wake up at a consistent time every day.
- Just say no to the snooze button. When the alarm goes off it’s time to get up. No excuses!
- Avoid checking emails or social media before you get to the office (and before you go to bed).
- Lay out your clothing the night before.
- Set the coffee maker to auto-brew and wake up to a fresh cup of joe. The smell of coffee will also help you wake up and motivate you to get out of bed.
- Prepare lunch for yourself (or your children) the night before.
- Keep easy breakfast foods like fruit or granola bars on hand in case you find yourself in a time crunch.
5. Practice good posture
Not only does standing up straight and tall make you look great, it also gives you a surge of hormones that can make you feel more confident. Who wouldn’t want that first thing in the morning? Also, the more you practice good posture, the less likely you you are to fall into bad slouching habits in the afternoon. If you find yourself in a 2pm slump, try getting into good posture before reaching for a coffee or salty snack – trust us, it’s the perfect afternoon pick me up!
