Lumo Back for Lower Back

Lumo BodyTech has worked with spine physicians and physical therapists to develop a biomechanical model of posture for the lower back. This model includes personalized calibration algorithms that adapt to each person’s body shape. These are used to create a recommended optimal back posture model, making Lumo Back highly effective at measuring and correcting lower back posture. Improper lower back posture (AKA slouching) often leads to poor neck and upper back posture. Getting To Neutral Posture

Lumo Back’s goal is to get you into a neutral pelvis position, so it is primarily measuring pelvic tilt angle.  Spine experts recommend that, for most people, a neutral pelvic position is key to good posture.  Lumo’s sensors measure pelvic tilt and help guide your body position to a neutral pelvis alignment by giving you consistent posture feedback.  If you slouch with your lower back, lean forward, lean backwards, or shift your weight to one side, Lumo Back will let you know via a gentle vibration so you can learn to correct your stance.

The Biomechanical Model

Lumo Back’s biomechanical model of posture for the lower back includes personalized calibration algorithms, making it a very effective tool at tracking and correcting posture.  The Lumo Back sensor, worn on a belt around the lower waist, has embedded inertial sensors which feed data to machine-learning algorithms that continuously track the amount of time spent slouching, sitting, standing, and sleeping.  It also functions as a pedometer, tracking its wearers’ number of steps. This data is used by the sensor and app to provide vibratory and visual feedback to promote good posture and increased movement.

What’s Next?

The engineering team is working on a host of additional tracking features and as they are completed, they will be automatically delivered to sensors that people already own.  The Lumo Back sensor is a powerful connected computing system in its own right, enhanced through the capabilities of smartphones and tablets.

Dr. Rajan Perkash is the head of the Neurosurgery and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Departments at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s Mountain View site. For the past 15 years, he has specialized in managing spinal pain. He is Board Certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with a subspecialty Board Certified in pain medicine.
