Easy Ways To Meet Your Step Goal At Work

Like the majority of Americans, when I’m not running or working out at the gym, I live a relatively sedentary life. I sit at a desk for 8+ hours a day and commute to and from work in my car – more sitting. To combat my sloth-like tendencies, I decided it was time to get moving and set a daily activity goal of 10,000 steps per day; 5,000 of which I aimed to achieve while at the office.

Using my Lumo Lift app, I tracked my daily steps and monitored my progress over time. On the first day I followed my typical routine and was shocked at how little I moved. I parked in my usual parking spot, drove to buy lunch and got up from my desk only to get coffee. At the end of the day, my step count was pretty abysmal.


For better results on day 2, I brainstormed several ideas to get me up and moving. Putting these ideas into practice, I was much more successful moving forward. Below are some of the tactics I utilized to meet my goal.

Set goals

This may sound obvious, but it helps to have a trackable goal in mind before you get started. This way you can easily measure your success and know whether or not you’re falling short.

Take the stairs

If you are lucky enough to have stairs in your building, use them as much as possible! In addition to getting more steps, you’ll also get your heart rate up and burn more calories.

Park far away

Choose a parking spot as far away from the front door as possible. If you have lots of things to carry, make multiple trips. More trips means more steps.

Set a reminder to move every hour

Set a reminder on your phone or calendar to get up and walk or stretch every hour. A quick walk down the hall will give your body a break from sitting and refresh your eyes from staring at a computer screen.

Take a walk at lunch

If the weather is tolerable, commit at least half of your lunch hour to walking. If you don’t bring your lunch and there are restaurants or food options near your office, walk, don’t drive.

Walk to work

If it’s an option, commit to walking, cycling or taking public transportation to work at least once a week. Not only will you be cutting down on vehicle emissions and gas usage, you will get some great exercise before and after work.

Lead by example

    On the days that I don’t work out at a gym or on the road, Ii row on the erg. (Concept ll indoor rowing machine). I have found no way to get “Credit” on the Luma device dring these workouts and object to getting a “Slouchy” commentary after putting in 5000 meters.
    Somebody must have solved this problem.
    The other question is how to secure the device to the chest when not wearing a shirt as happens so often in warm weather. I suspect that the sticky tabs used to secure EKG leads might work but have not tried it yet.
